We recently listed “The 10 Most Fashionable Men Of 2009″, and now it’s time to shine the spotlight on their female counterparts.

The basis for this list is the same as the men – women who get their street as well as their red carpet looks right, and those who take risks in true trendsetting style.

 

Not every outfit may have been a hit, but they have a field day with fashion and try different things. We are expecting varying opinions, so let your thoughts be known!

 

10. Kim Kardashian

 

 

 

 Kim Kardashian would’ve been higher up on the list, but we would first love to see this woman not look so dolled up each time she leaves the house. Perhaps try a pair of fly kicks instead of her super high heels for once?

 

 

Either way, we know Kim has a passion for fashion and always looks on point. She’s not afraid to try new fierce new looks, like her temporary blond locks, and these studded gloves by Phillip Lim which she tweeted her excitement about recently:

9. Lady Gaga

 

You may question our decision to put the outrageous Lady Gaga on this list – but we have good reason. Gaga is like that haute couture gown you can’t take your eyes off, but you know you wouldn’t dare try to pull off in the streets. You admire it from afar, as a work of art.

 

 

 

She has somehow blended the looks of past, present and future to create a unique style all her own. She is the younger Madonna, the extreme Britney Spears, the female Marilyn Manson all in one.

 

 

 

Believe it or not, her style has definitely influenced the general public and celebrities alike. It may be in a subtle way, but its there. She helped jump start the emergence of fetish inspired clothing, including the leotard and thigh high boots – which she took fantastical new heights.

 

We’re sure you’ll be seeing more Gaga inspired fashion on your favorite runways, and in your favorite magazines and retailers for some time.

 

8. Beyoncé

 

 

 

At times, Beyoncé seems to play it safe…a little too safe. This goes from bland color choices to cuts of clothing. But we noticed the multi-talented star turned up the edginess a tad this year.

She confidently wore the marching band jacket trend, a bright sequined number to this year’s BET Awards, “jeggings”, thigh high boots and more.

 

Maybe she’s been hanging out with Gaga too much, or Sasha Fierce got the best of her. Who knows, but we dig it.

 

7. Victoria Beckham

 

 

 

Seventh place goes to the “Posh” woman whose legs are sticking out of the Marc Jacobs bag in the main picture - Victoria Beckham. With a doll-like presence, Mrs. Beckham is very good at playing dress up. She never shies away from displaying the latest and challenging fashion trends, giving off the impression that she is walking a catwalk at all times.

She was quick to rock this year’s hottest trends – the boyfriend jean, large shoulders, leather pants, bleached denim, and many more. Victoria also just re-launched her denim line for winter 2009.

Her street looks are edgy and sharp, and her red carpet style is extravagant. Like hubby, like wifey – style seems to run deep in Beckham family.

 

 6. Cassie

 

 

 

She may have been ridiculed by many for that half-shaven head, but it is hard to deny that Cassie can dress right all around. We’ve seen the gorgeous songstress go from a Hellz Bellz tee and Nike sneakers to elegant dresses for events and award shows.

 

 

This year she clearly kicked up the punk rock meter, perhaps taking the cue from some of her peers? She recently did a daring campaign for DimePiece where she was almost unrecognizable:

 

 

 

Cassie gets credit for going beyond being just a pretty face in pretty dresses – she has confidently rocked her bold new looks this year, not paying much mind about what others have to say.

 

5. Teyana Taylor

 

 

 

This 19 year-old Harlem native was always known for her tomboy streetwear, but we can see Teyana Taylor is growing up fast.

 

 

As she asked you to do with her first single, Google her – you’ll see how she manages to look smashing whether dressed up or down. Married To The Mob recently featured her in their ad campaign, in which she look sexy and street at the same time:

 

 

She has also brought her spunky style to Diesel‘s runway:

 

 

Teyana’s youth shines through her fun and colorful fashion sense, and we’re sure she’ll be giving some other well known fashionistas a real run for their money in coming years.

 

 

4. Keri Hilson

 

 

 

Keri Hilson definitely has a glam retro style going. She is not afraid of leather, big hoop earrings, high top sneakers and lots of glitter.

 

 

Her hairdo has changed numerous times, going from a short curly black and blond concoction to her now longer, softer look. She recently showed it off and wowed us with her gorgeous sequin dress at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Keri earns points for being playful with fashion, taking it back to the 80s in a tasteful way and then quickly turning up the heat on the red carpet as needed!

 

 

 

3. Gwen Stefani

 

 

 

Gwen Stefani first broke out on the music scene with a serious ska swag.

Although she was a stunning beauty since those days, her look has grown up in recent years. But along with her signature blond locks and red lips, she maintains her fun attitude when it comes to fashion. Her L.A.M.B. clothing line, still going strong, combines her love for ska with luxurious haute couture style.

 

 

 

Gwen just may have a couple of the most fashionable children as well – her adorable toddlers Kingston and Zuma are always decked out in the freshest gear.

2. Amber Rose

 

 

 

Amber Rose did a sexy saunter onto the scene this year, seemingly coming out of nowhere and taking the fashion industry by storm.

The stripper turned model found fame through being the girlfriend of our most fashionable man, Kanye West, but what has kept her in the limelight and plastered across blogs on a regular is surely her swag. We use that word instead of “style”, but it goes further than that.

 

 

We may have not even heard the woman speak, but she somehow screams confidence, and an “I don’t give a what” attitude. Many seem to be annoyed at the fact that she became famous for no good reason, but can you imagine this year in fashion without Miss Rose? After all, look at what she must have done for legging sales! Along with her never ending supply of interesting leggings, she is known for her futuristic shades, candy pink lips (recently blue lips as well), Doc Martens, and boyish sweat pants/jeans. Oh, and she also supports her boyfriend’s kicks for Louis Vuitton:

 

 

She may seem more street than chic with her signature blond shaved head and tattoos, but just look at how nice she cleans up.

 

 

 

1. Rihanna

 

 

 

While the rock star look may have become mainstream recently, we remember when people were scratching their heads at how and why Rihanna took her good girl look to the bad side years ago. She came out on the scene with long sun-kissed locks, and traded them in for a short jet black bob back in 2007.

 

From there, the good girl went bad…and just got badder as everyone else followed suit. While some of her looks are reminiscent of Prince, Michael Jackson, and the 80s Madonna to name a few, the way she pulls it together and mixes up her style makes her one of a kind. It seems like she became a super glamorous style icon overnight, rocking the boldest runway looks in the streets with such a casual nonchalant manner.

 

 

Along with her haute couture and rock chic looks, Rihanna knows when and how to lighten up her look. She looks equally as good in her Nike kicks as she does in a ridiculously high Louboutin heel.

 

 

 

Just to name a few looks she helped crank the popularity of: Spikes and studs on everything from heels to dresses, large shoulders, cut up leather tights, garter belts for every day, distressed denim, the tin soldier-esque hat, and many more.

 

 

What we have based this list on are men who can effortlessly go from fresh street wear to dapper formal wear.

 

It includes rappers, an athlete, and a couple of R&B crooners. We also took into consideration those who take risks once in a while – so necessary when it comes to fashion!

 

Some of these guys may have been looked over in the style department, but we watched them this year…and they were looking good.

10. Ludacris

 

 

Although Ludacris hasn’t quite established a “signature” look like some of our other fashionable men have, we had to give him credit for how far his style has come since he first broke out on the scene.

His look is smarter on both the red carpet as well as the streets. He went from a wild afro to a clean shaven head, tailored suits, and grown up street style. We’ve seen him rock flannel shirts, Air Force Ones, brands like Crooks & Castles, Lacoste, as well as Armani suits.

 

 

 

 

9. Jay-Z

 

 

Although he may have been considered as a style icon to many previous to 2009, Jay-Z really stepped up his game this year.

 

While he didn’t sell out that classic hip hop style, he did indeed clean it up. Jay mixed in distinguished pieces like knit cardigans, classy leather jackets, thick framed eye wear, clean high top sneakers from Lanvin to Supra, and raw denim – neither excessively baggy nor skinny. Timbs may have made a big comeback this year, but it doesn’t look like Jay ever took his off!

 

Another characteristic of Jay’s style? All black everything. The hip hop mogul favors this shade more than any other, from his jackets to sweaters, kicks, and of course the shades that seem to accompany him everywhere.

 

On top of the brands mentioned, we’ve seen him rock his very own urban success – Rocawear – as well as PRPS and Play Cloths.

 

 

When it comes to red carpet style, Jay-Z has been looking immaculate and sophisticated in well-made suits, and shoes to match.

 

 

 

8. Trey Songz

 

 

Yet another celebrity who may have been overlooked in the style department, Trey Songz has upped his appeal by ditching his cornrows and adopting clean, fitted apparel.

 

 

As you can see in the image above, he is just as hot in formal wear as he is in urban gear. We’ve seen him rock the likes of Gucci, Radii footwear, Money Clothing, and most recently one of the hottest new watch brands, Flud.

 

When we’ve seen him out and about, its in mostly knit sweaters, tees and button down shirts – hence, the reason we picked him for our gift guide to classic button down shirts:

 

 

 

7. Justin Timberlake

 

 

Justin Timberlake is the epitome of menswear. He’s best known for rocking fitted suits, vests, skinny ties, and of course a crisp pair of sneakers to match. His own clothing line, William Rast, is a hit, and he is not afraid to rep it.

 

 

Like the line, Justin is preppy with an urban edge.

Other brands he’s known to support are J.Lindeberg, Alternative Apparel and Polo.

 

 

6. Diddy

 

 

Diddy helped shaped urban fashion, we can’t deny that. From his Sean John brand to his seemingly never-ending variations to the classic tux, his look usually screams luxury. Most often seen in suits, he is known for adding some bling to them – incorporating shiny, textured fabrics, two tone colors and more.

 

His casual looks are pretty simple – you may catch him in a Rocksmith tee, leather jacket, denim, and Nike sneakers, etc. We saw him bust out a velour tracksuit last year – a bold move considering the trend has been quiet for some time now. Most recently, he collaborated with the streetwear brand, Supreme, for a photo shoot and interview. Many criticized the move on both Supreme’s and Diddy’s end, accusing Supreme of “selling out” and Diddy for just trying to stay relevant by connecting with the ever-growing skate/streetwear market. Perhaps it is Diddy just staying on top of his game?

 

 

 

5. T.I.

 

T.I.

 

Even though he’s been locked up for a good chunk of ’09, T.I. still deserves some shine for being stylistically on point.

 

His signature tilted beanie, his street swag, and the way he cleans up in a suit got him on this list. His clothing line AKOO, which he is known to proudly rock himself, is a polished urban line with smart cardigans, crew neck sweatshirts, rugbys and more.

 

Other brands he’s been spotted in include Carrera, CAVI, and his all time favorite – Polo.

 

 

 

4. Chris Brown

Chris Brown has undoubtedly had a dismal year, but we’re here shed some light on at least one area he has grown in – his fashion style.

 

He is clearly a huge fan of skate inspired clothing, rocking brands like The Hundreds and Supra, as well as high end designer labels like Helmut Lang and Gucci.

 

 

Michael Jackson being one of his idols is evident in red carpet and on-stage outfit choices Chris has made. He has confidently worn the marching band jacket, a “Thriller” inspired red patent leather jacket and many more looks adopted from the King of Pop’s wardrobe.

 

Some may argue that Chris’ style has been slightly clown-ish, but he is a young lad experimenting with fashion and at least taking risks. His style has definitely become more subdued since he first launched his music career.

 

Where he scored some major points was ironically his court appearance outfits. The gray check suit seen below was fresh:

 

 

 

3. Pharrell

 

 

Pharrell‘s unique style translates from his music to his fashion sense.

 

He has two hit clothing brands under his belt: Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream. The lines are playful streetwear creations that reflect one aspect of Pharrell’s style. Then there are his more posh looks, as we can see by his ad for Louis Vuitton.

 

 

 

He pushes the envelope with pieces like his Hermes handbag (or “murse”), the brown boots pictured above, and his studded Christian Louboutin sneakers.

 

2. David Beckham

 

 

Soccer star David Beckham can go from refined to urban and remain extremely fashionable throughout the process.

 

He rocks a sexy rugged look in the streets with baggy distressed PRPS jeans, Kanye West x Louis Vuitton sneakers, Abercrombie & Fitch plaid shirts etc.

 

When it comes to red carpet looks, he pulls off slim fitted suits in a confident and masculine way. His style can best be described as part hip hop, preppy and mod menswear.

 

We’re sure his fashionista wife, Victoria Beckham, plays at least a small part in David always looking right!

 

 

 

 

1. Kanye West

 

 

And the most fashionable man of 2009 is Kanye West – hands down.

 

This man is a leader, a true trend setter when it comes to style. As much hate as he receives for his “metrosexual” swag, Kanye knows exactly what he is doing. He adapts flamboyant runway styles into dope urban looks that quickly trickle into the streets and into the wardrobes of fashionable men and women.

 

Who knows what is going on with his much anticipated Pastelle line, but Kanye has launched one of the flyest sneakers of 2009 – the Air Yeezy – along with his hit designer collaboration sneaker with Louis Vuitton.

 

He was one of the first to don the biggest trends of 2009, like double denim, work boots, denim shirts, shorter shorts, and much much more. Perhaps his hottest accessory is his vixen girlfriend, Amber Rose. The two make a fashion power couple who are hard to keep your eyes off.

 

Some of the brands we’ve seen this fashion icon rock in ’09 are Martin Margiela, Yves St. Laurent, G-Shock, and SUPER.

 

 

 

 

 

Some tough choices had to be made, but there you have it…

 

Now we’re sure there are those who agree and those with opposing opinions.

We recently highlighted major trends of 2009 in the urban market. Now it’s time to focus in on key pieces of the year and vote on whether they have longevity or not.

 

Cassie

 

Cassie is rocking one of them above – the romper. This one piece delight is made in all different fabrics and fits, and saves a lot of time for us ladies when it comes to matching up tops and bottoms!

 

Do you think it will stick around for a while?

 

 

The harem or “MC Hammer” pant is a questionable piece, flattering in some cases and not so much in others. This pant comes in various fabrics, lengths and degrees of bagginess.

 

 

Oh, the leotard. We saw it go from Rihanna‘s on stage attire to everyday wear. Do you think this trend will continue spreading or disintegrate quickly? It requires lots of confidence, especially when worn without tights like Nicki Minaj did above.

 

 

With the rock trend being such a hit this year, it was inevitable that leather would takeover everything from pants to dresses and tops. Leather (or even faux leather) leggings and pants were rocked from the office to the club in many cases this year. Are you sick of seeing this look?

 

 

Buffalo plaid…seriously, it has been everywhere this year. Black combined with yellow, pink, teal, purple, blue – you name it. While well known brands were knocking them out, so were stores like Forever 21 and Strawberry under private labels or generic brand names. Lately we’ve been seeing brands flirt with variations on the typical check design.

Is it played out?

 

 

After a period of clean denim being in, heavily destructed denim took the stage. Bleached, ripped, distressed – have we had enough of these loud styles? Is it back to clean, crisp denim soon?

 

 

Ah, the murse. With fans like Kanye assisting in their popularity, and brands like COOGI creating some dope designs, will more men start carrying them?

Short(er) shorts for men. It may be a runway image you see above, but even urban brands like CAVI and LRG have started slimming their shorts’ fits and cutting them just above the knee. Are the days of drooping, wide shorts over?

The ska trend stems from a music genre that falls between rocksteady and reggae, with roots from Jamaica. It falls somewhere between punk rock and skater, with an added Caribbean feel.

• Gray, black, white, anything bright and/or neon – blue, pink, yellow, green – you get the idea.

Hip Hop Meets Biker:

 

Thomas Jones What we are referring to here is west coast, tattoo inspired apparel and accessories (Ed Hardy, Affliction, etc.), paired with heavily embellished jeans, lots of bling, and fitted hats that must match up to your sneakers – exactly. Fans include southern rappers, NBA and NFL players. Common colors associated with this trend:

• Primary and secondary colors (red, green, blue, orange, etc.), gold.

Common fabrics associated with this trend:

• Leather, cotton, denim.

• Loud tattoo/bling’d out tees, denim with heavy embroidered images, leather patches, studs, etc., flashy sneakers, gold chains and lots and lots of ice.
